Finally, the restrictions are lifting and the Rottnest Express is transporting people to this beautiful place called Rottnest Island. It so happens that I live really close to the ferry terminal and had heard all types of opinions about this place. Some people saying is not really worth the time, others saying they love it. After having visited I can definitely say it is worth it!
On the island, you have the option to rent bikes (better yet if you have your own!). It will take a full day to bike across the entire island and I’d recommend looking into which direction to start. My friend and I started south, from the bike rental and made our way clockwise, and we had many hills! And we ran out of time actually to bike all the way to the most western side of the island. I would imagine that going counterclockwise would involve fewer hills, therefore saving time and energy.
Bike rental was 30$ per person and in our case, we didn’t have to pre-book. You get a helmet as well which you need to wear all the time. If you take your own bike is 15$.
I also recommend bringing your own snacks, though there is a Subway and a few local coffee places in the main mall, there is not much anywhere else. And is good to remember to keep hydration and energy levels throughout the day.
The option of walking is also there. I could easily spend hours watching the local animals and taking photos with different lenses and time-lapses of the clouds behind the lighthouses. There are several beaches you can easily access on foot. Really beautiful!
Most of the animals especially the adorable and friendly Quokka gather near the Thompson Bay, which according to the locals is because they have easy access to food. Though you will get a map and it indicates where they gather.
It really is a beautiful place to see – if you are in WA for a visit or if you are local, you will enjoy all the same.
